Kalvino Coria is a Mexican American visual artist (b. 1991, Anaheim, CA) based in Los Angeles Area.
He is a first-generation child of two religious immigrants. Consequently, his sources of inspiration stem from his family’s traditional Mexican background, his experiences as a queer individual, and the MTV/pop culture of the 1990s/2000s.
His current bodies of work explore the mystifying facets of identity, cultural preservation, and challenge preconceived notions by using satire and humor. The overall objective of his work is to broaden the audience's understanding of subjects that are overlooked or subverted by the United State’s mainstream media and heteronormative culture.
Kalvino utilizes a skillful breadth of analog, digital, and experimental photographic techniques, all of which are key to allowing these works to come into fruition. He’s also exploring 3D art, durational performance, collaging and narrative video.
Kalvino holds an A.A. in studio art from Riverside City College and acquired a B.F.A. in photography from San Jose State University.
During his time at Orange Coast College in their School of Photography, he was awarded two of the highest scholarships afforded to students for his presented portfolios and given honorable mentions for every photo competition he entered. His work’s been exhibited during Photo LA, at OCCA, and nationally in 2023 at the SPE W x SW New Wave Exhibition. He’s also freelanced and worked for companies such as Neiman Marcus, Center Theatre Group, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Sage View Advisory Group, and the Fortune 500 company CBRE.
